apple crumb pie recipe

apple crumb pieFor many years, I’ve been making an apple crumb pie or using the same recipe for an apple crumble. Using a crumb instead of a typical pie top adds a lot of extra flavor, so you’ll win over those friends who typically don’t like pies. This was also the second pie that I made in the pie competition a few weeks back (along with the banana cream).

To make this into an apple crumble, eliminate the crust and use a 9×9 baking pan instead.

1 cup granulated sugar
6 cups granny smith apples (peeled and cut into small slices)
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1 cup flour
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 cinnamon pie crust (recipe here)

1. Make the cinnamon pie crust in advance.
2. Preheat the oven to 375 degree F.
3. Place the sliced apples in a large bowl and mix with the cinnamon and sugar until the apples are completely covered.
4. Pour apple mixture into pie mixture in crust
5. Cut butter into tiny pieces and put into a medium sized bowl.
6. Add flour and brown sugar and mix with a knife (continuing to cut the butter) until a crumb crumb mixture
7. Sprinkle the crumb on top of the apple crumb pie ready to bake
8. Bake the pie for about 50 minutes.
9. Cool pie for about 10 minutes before serving.
10. Top with vanilla ice cream (optional).
