simple (& delicious) dinner party dessert: salted chocolate custard recipe

chocolate custardDinner parties are fun to host but can also be really stressful. Most of my favorite dessert recipes are a bit too much work with all the other preparation that goes into a dinner party, so I usually would just resort to buying ice cream for dessert. I recently found this Martha Stewart’s mocha custard recipe and it is really so simple (less than 10 minutes of active prep time) that it works even when you’re under a time crunch and will surely impress your dinner guests. I prefer pure chocolate instead of mocha, so I adapted the recipe and also added some sea salt. Start this before your dinner prep, put it in the fridge, and it’ll be ready to go once you reach the dessert course.

Ingredients
1 envelope (1/4 ounce) unflavored gelatin
1/4 cup cold water
1 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon chocolate powder
4 ounces bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped
2 cups milk
pinch of sea salt

Directions
1. In a small bowl, sprinkle gelatin over 1/4 cup cold water. Allow it to soften (approximately 5 minutes).
2. Meanwhile, in a medium saucepan, bring cream to a boil over high heat.
3. Reduce heat to low; whisk in sugar and chocolate powder until dissolved, about 1 minutes.
4. Whisk in chocolate until melted (be careful not to let it burn), about 2 minutes.
5. Remove from heat. Whisk softened gelatin into cream mixture until gelatin has dissolved about 1 minute.
6. Stir in milk. chocolate custard prep
7. Strain into a large liquid measuring cup (for easy pouring). Divide evenly among six 6-ounce coffee cups (or any other type of cup or glass you want – I chose these martini glasses). Note that it’ll be very liquid – although it may seem not thick enough, it will set in the fridge.
8. Refrigerate until set, at least 3 hours.
9. Sprinkle a bit of sea salt and serve! Yum!
