upgrade your style past the post-holiday blues

upgrade your style beyond the holiday bluesWe all go through what I call “the weight cycle”, periods of time when we are exercising regularly and eating relatively healthy to ones when we are prioritizing other activities and indulging a bit. It may seem natural to reach for some baggy, body concealing clothes during the post-holiday, “weight gain” phase. But, wearing those clothes are only going to make you feel down, and that is no way to start the new year.

You may automatically dismiss shopping until you lose your “holiday weight”, but your style does not need to wait. Similar to dividing your wardrobe into essentials versus trend pieces, there are essentials that will make you feel stylish and sexy without depending on your weight. There are many pieces that you can still shop for (coats, shoes, accessories), but these are my top 3 essentials to keep you feeling pretty through the holiday blues.

Dresses of all styles (casual to dressy) are essential to every wardrobe and the ultimate in versatility. Many silhouettes are feminine and flattering – full skirts, a-line skirt dress, wrap dress – without hugging the areas that you may feel uncomfortable about. Add a denim jacket to play the dress down or a blazer to make it work appropriate. Depending on the temperature, you can also add tights to keep you warm. (Image: Nicholas dress at Intermix)

Boyfriend jeans have a relaxed fit that helps conceal the legs. To avoid the baggy, boy look, pair it with a fitted top and a pair of heels. Alternatively, if you tend to gain weight in the mid-section, wear a pair of skinny jeans with an oversized top and a pair of heels. (Image: Current/Elliott jeans at net-a-porter)

Printed (or colorful) shoes are popping up everywhere. What I love most about a fun pair of shoes is that a good pair can be worn from day to night, work or out, and the sight of them alone can put you in a good mood. There are so many to pick from, select style that is the most comfortable and puts you in your happy place.
