When I’m working on the blog, my home is my office. It’s been a very casual work environment. But I’ve had a really great opportunity come my way, so in just another week I’ll be back to full time work and heading into an “office” Monday through Friday.
Although I have plenty of handbags, I figure a new job warrants a new handbag. There are a lot of different “rules” when it comes to office fashion depending on the type of industry you work in, the company culture, the list goes on. But the one thing that doesn’t really change is the handbag. Everyone needs a professional looking handbag to wear to work. I’ve narrowed down my favorites to this shopping list.
splurge: Alexander McQueen tote // Alexander Wang satchel // ZAC Zac Posen shoulder bag (another cute option) // Rachael Ruddick shopper
save: Rebecca Minkoff satchel // Zara top handle bag // Topshop bag (also in black) // Zara shopper
There are a couple of things to consider when finding that perfect work handbag:
- A structured handbag looks polished and professional. In even the most casual work environments, you want to look polished. A slouchy handbag can look a bit sloppy and makes it hard to keep your bag organized.
- It needs to be large and sturdy enough to fit what you’re transporting to and from the office. It may be a laptop, a notebook, or maybe just your personal belongings. If you’re like me and taking the bus to work, you probably want a bag that is slightly on the larger size (but not so large and heavy that it makes it difficult to carry).
- A handbag for the office may be worth the splurge (or even an excuse for one), but be cautious of getting anything too flashy. The office may not be the best place to show off your newest Chanel or Hermes bag.
- Find a handbag that fits your personality. When it comes to the office, many people feel the need to go completely neutral. Sure you want to be professional, but don’t be afraid to show a bit of your personality whether it’s with a touch of color of just the style that you pick.
